Coin collector reveals how you can exchange your 20c for $4000 — “There’s plenty of things to look for!"

We have previously shared some tips on how to earn a fortune from your spare change by spotting the details that make them valuable.

Now, we are delighted to share another hack for finding rare coins that might be hiding in your wallet and can go for thousands of dollars.

Victorian coin enthusiast Michael McCauley has gone viral after he posted a video on TikTok, revealing some of his coin hunting secrets.

In the video, Michael, who posts under the username @coincollecting_detecting, is seen inspecting several 20c coin rolls from the bank, making sure that there weren't any rare finds in the stack.

The coin collector advises: “Start looking through them for rare dates.”

“There’s plenty of things to look for."

Rare dates are those particular time frames when faulty coins were reported to have been produced and circulated.

The video — which amassed more than 2.1 million views — then focuses on Michael coming across a 2004 20c coin.

The coin collector explains that 20c coins with a "pointy" 'A' in Australia could value as much as $10.

Michael then notices a silver coin dating back to 1966, claiming that it could potentially be valued as high as $4000.

The coin enthusiast says: “A small amount of them (1966 coins) have a wavy baseline on the ‘2’.”

The rare 1966 coins could sell as much as "$250 and $4000 if you can find one".

Unfortunately, the coins shown do not have the "faults" that could have made them much more valuable.

However, one TikTok user left a comment on the video claiming that he actually had been in possession of the rare coins and he had not realised the potential value until he saw the video.

The comment read: “Bro I have definitely had one of those wavy 2’s. Crying."

Michael replied: “NOOOOO!!!! Man, they are hard to find. Have to find two more to replace them.”

Elsewhere in the video, the coin collector also reveals that some 20c coins minted in 2010 could earn a fortune.

Michael advises that you should look out for a "bubble above the platypus' claws" as they can be sold for quite the hefty price!

Finally, the coin collector advises people who are in possession of the rare coins to advertise them on Ebay as a lot of coin collectors are looking for them on the platform and are willing to pay high rates for the coins.

So, there you have it, folks! Please check your spare change, you might end up finding something worth a small fortune!

I don't deal in cash any more. I have had the same $50 note and $10 change in my wallet for well over two years. Only keep them for "emergencies" but to date have not come across anything that my trusty credit card can't help with. I dread to think though how much in rare or special coins I have unwittingly passed on in the past.;):(

I don't use money - coins or notes very often... only a card theses days... even when My Wife says to use money, at the checkout - out comes the card,..lol... and I never check My change either.... if it is correct... so it is safer to use a card... when I see older folk [some times younger than Me] use money... I always think they should upgrade to a card...
