Chiropractor exposes the surprising truth: Why sleeping on your front could risk your health

The way you sleep can have a profound impact on your health, and one chiropractor has warned against a common sleeping position that could be causing you more harm than good.

Dr Jae Chang has shared his professional insights on social media on why sleeping on your front should be avoided at all costs.

In a viral video, Dr Chang explained that sleeping on your stomach can lead to various health issues.

The video, which has amassed over 21 million views, sparked a conversation about the importance of sleep posture and its impact on overall health.

According to Dr Chang, sleeping on your stomach can put undue stress on your neck and lower back.

'If you are sleeping on your stomach, you have to turn your head to one side. It can cause strain and stress to your neck and put more stress on your lower back,' he explained.

Moreover, he pointed out that this sleeping position can negatively affect the heart.

‘This sleeping position can also put stress on your heart and possibly cause some cardiovascular problems for those people who have heart issues,’ he stated.

The Science Behind Sleep Posture

Sleeping on your front can hinder breathing and cause irregular curvature of the spine. Being the heaviest part of your body, your torso naturally sinks deeper into the mattress. This can cause your back to arch, leading to your spine being stretched out of alignment.

The result? You may wake up with aches, pains, and muscle tightness.

In the neck, this misalignment could even lead to migraines. Tension headaches can also occur due to neck and scalp muscles tensing or contracting.

Furthermore, the position forces you to turn your head, leading to inflammation and pain in the neck muscles and back pain.

The Best Sleep Positions According to Experts

Despite numerous social media users in the comments claiming they can only sleep on their stomachs, experts maintain that lying on your back or side is the healthiest option.

Sleeping on your back evenly is optimal because it distributes body weight and reduces stress. This position can help maintain the natural curve of your spine and prevent neck and back pain.

Sleeping on your side is also beneficial because it can reduce back pain. It is often recommended for those who snore or have sleep apnea, as it can help keep the airways open.

Dr Chang also recommended these sleeping positions:

A 2022 study by Sleepmaker found that 75 per cent of Australians choose to sleep on their side, while 13 per cent sleep on their back and 12 per cent sleep on their stomach.

The Importance of a Good Night's Sleep

Sleep is not just about closing your eyes and waking up refreshed the next day. It's a complex process that affects almost every aspect of our health. From our mood to our physical well-being, the quality and quantity of our sleep play a crucial role.

Sleeping in the wrong position can lead to a host of health issues, including chronic pain, sleep apnea, and even heart problems. Therefore, paying attention to your sleep posture and making necessary adjustments to ensure you're not putting unnecessary strain on your body.

Remember, if you're experiencing discomfort or pain, it's always best to seek professional advice. A healthcare professional can provide personalised advice based on your specific needs and circumstances.

I have sleep aponea and I sleep on my side, easier to breathe.

I'm a side sleeper 😴 funny I've noticed if I'm suffering heartburn it is worst when I sleep on my left side
Sleeping on your left side may be putting pressure on your stomach which is on your left side under your diaphragm.
I sleep in a Zero G formation.

I'm left handed I wonder if that's the difference to you feeling it on your right
? Question Mark ? I don't know but I am also Left Handed. I am Asthmatic and for me I am more comfortable on my right side. I can also sleep on my left side but I prefer the right side.
Never on my back, even for a short time it is not good, or helpful, in that position.

StarTrekker, sorry for being ignorant but what is a Zero G formation?
I don't know a G Formation either. Maybe with your legs bent upwards ? When you are on your side, left or right ?

Many articles say you should sleep on your left side. Sleeping face down is a hard habit to change. And yes it does cause many problems including chronic pain.

How strange , I'm left handed, asthmatic and more comfortable on my right side as well . Wouldn't you think being left handed you would be more comfortable on your left.

Zero G is the Astronaut during lift off. which means sleeping on your back with both back and legs in a raised position, easier done with a mechanical operated bed.... for a double situation you have 2 beds side by side and each is therefore able to set the bed to their own desire. Careful there some unscrupulous dealers out there selling these....

I'm 85% right side sleeper, 10% left side sleeper and 5% back sleeper. Back sleeping is conducive to snoring (so I've been told) so I avoid that when possible. NEVER on my stomach. How women, especially those well developed, can sleep on their stomachs, is beyond me, that's if they even do it!

Who knows ? I guess whatever is best for you !
