Our mum used to hand embroider a lot of our clothes when we were young, she made them all as well, and knitted and embroidered all our jumpers, cardigans. She always embroidered the babies clothes when she was pregnant. Usually made babies clothes in pink, blue, lemon, as no scans back then to tell if boy or girl. When my kids were young I always embroidered patterns on the clothes I made for them, tractors, trucks, cars, planes, trains etc for my son, flowers, butterflies, dancers, horses, hearts for my daughter. They loved it. Before our stillborn grandson was buried I embroidered his name, date of birth on the front yoke, and a motorbike, train, car and truck around the bottom of the little nightdress he was buried in. I cried many tears doing it but he looked really special lying in his little coffin with it on, added a personal touch to a very sad part of all our lives.

Blimey😢i’m tearing up reading this it’s so sad and so touching.😍

I am the only girl born in my dad’s family of five girls and five boys!!
So I had some of the most beautiful hand embroidered clothes, with a lot of them being hand stitched as well. Many smocked dresses and tops were made. One of my aunts would embroider my hair ribbons with bullion roses.
When I made my miniature debutant (I was 6 years old), the five of them sewed my dress..
Think I may have been a little spoilt!!

The art of hand embroidery and smocking is sought after now in christening wear, when I started my label my first order was 3500 smocked christening wear. All of my designs on Flickr under cutiepye cutiepye, I did extensive hand embroider and smocking

They are beautiful. I learnt how to do smocking from my mum as well and made my daughter and granddaughters smocked dresses when they were babies. Unfortunately my hands are now getting some arthritis in them and I find it hard to do too much fine hand sewing, but I have been teaching my granddaughters to knit, sew by hand and machine, embroider, do fanciwork on doyleys, crochet. None of them wanted to learn how to smock, so that will be a lost skill in my family. Guess I’m lucky they were happy to learn the rest. Out of 5 sisters I have 1 besides myself who can sew and knit, but she didn’t want to learn the rest. For years I made Star Wars costumes for my daughter, she is now an accomplished seamstress and makes her own with some help from me. She also embroiders on some of the costumes and does beadwork on them. She also makes Star Wars costumes for her husband.

My mum taught me how to sew I used to design and make mine and friends clothes. I love smocking. I’m the same I can’t sew on a button these days because of arthritis. Lucky I know 2ladies who do all that cheap. Star Wars that’s funny😹

Fantastic you did all of that ...that art is dying as only few people can do..
But it's the latest rage in old fashion christening wear...1 shop bought a gown from me for 180 armed and arred about price ..to find out later she put it on her shop sit for 1500.
Soft lined cotton, I spend 2 weeks on embroidery and smocking

That is such a sad story, but heart goes out to you and your family. That would have been the hardest thing to do
