Unusual discoveries on popular beaches can spark both curiosity and concern, especially when they involve unidentified objects with possible military ties.
What began as a routine morning for beachgoers took an unexpected turn, prompting a swift response from authorities.
Gold Coast locals were urged to steer clear of Main Beach after an early morning discovery left authorities scrambling to secure the area.
A group of walkers stumbled upon what appeared to be a torpedo on the sand around 5.45am on 27 February, prompting them to alert police.
Queensland Police quickly established an exclusion zone, restricting access to all beach entrances.
Georgia Costi arrived at the scene shortly after the incident was reported.
‘This is an extremely strange set of circumstances, you definitely don’t see it every day here on the Gold Coast,’ Costi said.
‘All of this started about 5.45am...people walking along this very popular spot noticed what appears to be either a torpedo or a missile sitting on the sand.’
Authorities initially advised the public to stay at least 100 metres away from the object, but police later expanded the restricted area.
‘However, I just spoke to the senior sergeant on scene who urged us to get even further back,’ Costi said.
The exact nature of the object remained unconfirmed, though police treated it as a potential threat.
‘At this stage, police haven’t been able to confirm what it is. Until they can do that, they are telling everyone to stay away from Main Beach,’ Costi reported.
Military exercises are common off the Queensland coast, raising speculation that the object may have originated from such operations.
‘If it turns out to be a military item, they will have to call in the Australian Defence Force who normally remove these sorts of things,’ Costi said.
Updates were expected as authorities continued their investigation.
